Lithan demonstrated the features of its "Open Online Classroom" to visitors at its "Career and Recruitment Open House" on 20th and 21st September. This "open classroom" allows students to attend classes from anywhere to see "live" lectures, and even interact with trainers through a social learning management system.
Based on the concept of "Cooperative Learning – Just in Time" model of education, Lithan Hall Academy offers continuing education and training (CET) programmes for working professionals. The "Career and Recruitment Open House" provided a venue for career advice and industry talks for people interested in pursuing careers in high-demand professions such as in enterprise resource planning, business intelligence, systems administration, technopreneurship, and technology sales and marketing.
"Lithan Hall Academy's education model is completely aligned with the ASPIRE committee's recommendations. Our course curricula provide job competencies based on the National Infocomm Competency Framework (NICF). We have also integrated work and learning through ‘Place and Train' delivery modes." said Mr Leslie Loh, Chairman of Lithan Hall Academy.
"With our Open Online Classroom, we expand our online learning capabilities through course delivery based on a 'Blended, Just in Time Learning' model. Through a social learning management system, we make available bite-sized just-in-time content for students to consume before coming to class. This is in-line with a Blended, Flipped Classroom methodology, where classes are conducted to facilitate practical application of knowledge gained rather than rote repetition of concepts already found in textbooks. Furthermore, students, who are unable to physically attend classes due to work commitments, can tune in online to our "live" streaming lecture from anywhere using any smart device." Mr Loh expounded further.
Lithan Hall Academy's Career and Recruitment Open House was done in conjunction with the "SSG Learning Festival@LLI" held over the weekend at the Lifelong Learning Institute. The Open House also commemorated the establishment of Singapore Computer Society's Student Chapter at Lithan Hall Academy for its students. This significant event was witnessed by key officers of the Singapore Computer Society (SCS) and Lithan Hall Academy; with the plaques exchanged between SCS President, Mr. Chak Kong Soon and Mr Loh.
Since 2009, Lithan Hall Academy has been providing cooperative learning programmes, which seamlessly combine competency-based education, work-integrated experiential learning, and career transition support. With a network of over 100 employers participating, Lithan Hall Academy has successfully delivered NICF programmes to over 1,000 students.
One of its recent graduates is Mdm Suzaina Binti Muhammad Lani, a back-to-work mother who was out of the workforce for five (5) years and was a hairdresser prior to that. She wanted to go back to work so she signed up for Lithan Hall Academy's NICF Advanced Certificate in IT Services (Infrastructure Support). This Express IT programme led her to a career in IT even though she did not have any previous IT work experience.
"At the start, I felt like an underdog because I had no background in IT. Nor did I complete my secondary education. However, I was glad that when I came knocking, Lithan Hall kindly opened their door for me. As a wife and a mother, I had to juggle my time as a student as well. With perseverance, last year, I finally completed my Express IT course and have landed an IT service support job in IBM. Today, I have also enrolled in the NICF Advanced Diploma in IT Services (Infrastructure Support), which will provide me with further IT skills to advance in my new career." remarked Mdm Suzaina.
