As a part of module project learner shall be able to operate a medium-sized LAN with multiple switches supporting VLANs, trunking, switch stacking, chassis aggregation and spanning tree protocols, and troubleshoot IP connectivity in a simulated environment with the guidance of experienced tutors. Learner shall also prepare relevant technical and user documentation related to the project.

Course Structure

NICF - Advanced Network

The objective of this course is to provide knowledge on Installation, configuration, operation, and troubleshooting network skills along with skills such as connecting to a WAN and implementing network security.

 

This course is part of the WSQ Qualification Course NICF Diploma in IT Services (System Support). This module can be offered as part of the above Qualification or independently as Modular Course.

 

Learner will understand how to build a Simple Network, and concepts related to Switching, Wireless LANs, LAN and WAN Connections, Network Environment Management, Scalable Medium – Sized Routed Network Construction, Single Area OSPF Implementation, EIGRP Implementation, implementing Wide Area Network, Access Control Lists,and Network Device Security.

 

This module contains 10 instructional units and is delivered in blended mode. The learning journey is described in the session plan.

 

The learner shall perform e-learning and lab exercises for each of the Instructional Units with online support from the Tutors. Subsequently, the learner shall perform a modular project with the guidance of an Industry expert who play the role of Project Tutor.

Session Outline Activities

Session 1: Orientation & Lecture - Live (2 hrs)

The student has to attend a Live Orientation Session conducted at LA campus or go through a recording of the Orientation Session.

The lecturer will deliver lectures & demo in the class room related to the topics of corresponding IUs :

  • IU 1: Building a Simple Network

 

During session: The Student will practice the  following functions in Server Lab environment (1 hour):

  • Using Windows Applications as Network Tools
  • Observing the TCP three way handshake
  • Observing extended PC network information 

Session 2: Lecture – Live (1 hour, 30 minutes)

The lecturer will deliver lectures & demo  in the class room related to the topics of corresponding IU:

  • IU 2: Switching

During session: The Student will practice the following functions in Server Lab environment (1 hour, 30 minutes):

  • Configuring Cisco switches
  • Configuring Switch Security
  • Configuring the Expanded switched networks
  • Troubleshooting switched networks

Session 3: Lecture – Live (1 hour, 30 minutes)

 The lecturer will deliver lectures & demo in the class room related to the topics of corresponding IU:

  • IU 3: Wireless LANs

During session: The Student will practice the following functions in Server Lab environment (1 hour, 30 minutes):

  • Converting decimal to binary and Binary to decimal
  •  Classifying Network Addressing
  • Computing usable Subnetworks and hosts
  • Calculating subnet masks 

Session 4: Lecture – Live (1 hour, 30 minutes)

 The lecturer will deliver lectures & demo in the class room related to the topics of corresponding IU:

  • IU 4: LAN Connections 

During session: The Student will practice the following functions in Server Lab environment (1 hour, 30 minutes):

  • Perform initial router startup and configuration
  • Enhancing the security of initial router configuration
  • Using CISCO SDM to configure DHCP server function 

Session 5: Lecture – Live (1 hour, 30 minutes)

 The lecturer will deliver lectures & demo in the class room related to the topics of corresponding IU:

  • IU 5: WAN Connections 

During session: The Student will practice the following functions in Server Lab environment (1 hour, 30 minutes):

  • Connecting to the internet
  • Connecting to the main office 

Session 6: Lecture – Live (1 hour, 30 minutes)

 The lecturer will deliver lectures & demo in the class room related to the topics of corresponding IU:

  • IU 6: Network Environment Management 

During session: The Student will practice the following functions in Server Lab environment (1 hour, 30 minutes):

  • Managing remote access sessions
  • Using CISCO discovery protocol
  • Managing router startup options
  • Managing CISCO Devices  

Session 7: Lecture – Live (1 hour, 30 minutes)

 The lecturer will deliver lectures & demo in the class room related to the topics of corresponding IU:

  • IU 7: Medium –Sized Routed Network Construction 

During session: The Student will practice the following functions in Server Lab environment (1 hour, 30 minutes):

  • Enabling dynamic routing to the main office  

Session 8: Lecture – Live (1 hour, 30 minutes)

 The lecturer will deliver lectures & demo in the class room related to the topics of corresponding IU:

  • IU 8: Single Area OSPF Implementation 

During session: The Student will practice the following functions in Server Lab environment (1 hour, 30 minutes):

  • Implementing OSPF
  • Troubleshooting OSPF 

Session 9: Lecture – Live (1 hour, 30 minutes)

The lecturer will deliver lectures & demo in the class room related to the topics of corresponding IU:

  • IU 9: EIGRP Implementation 

During session: The Student will practice the following functions in Server Lab environment (1 hour, 30 minutes):

  • Implementing EIGRP
  • Troubleshooting EIGRP

Session 10: Lecture – Live (1 hour, 30 minutes)

The lecturer will deliver lectures & demo in the class room related to the topics of corresponding IU:

  • IU 10: Access Control Lists 

During session: The Student will practice the following functions in Server Lab environment (1 hour, 30 minutes):

  • Implementing and troubleshooting ACLs

Session 11: Lecture – Live (1 hour, 30 minutes)

The lecturer will deliver lectures & demo in the class room related to the topics of corresponding IU:

  • IU 11: Address Space Management 

During session: The Student will practice the following functions in Server Lab environment (1 hour, 30 minutes):

  • Configuring NAT and PAT
  • Implementing IPV6 

Session 12: Lecture – Live (1 hour, 30 minutes)

The lecturer will deliver lectures & demo in the class room related to the topics of corresponding IU:

  • IU 12: LAN Extension into a WAN with frame relay

During session: The Student will practice the following functions in Server Lab environment (1 hour, 30 minutes):

  • Establishing a Frame relay WAN
  • Troubleshooting Frame relay WANs

Session 13: Summative Assessment (3 hrs)

Students will  attempt a Theory Test (45 mins) & a Practical Test  (2 hrs)

During session: Assessor will provide review and feedback (15 mins)

Competency Unit

IT-NMM-401S-1 : Install and configure a switch (2 Credit Values)

IT-NMM-402S-1 : Install switches in multi-switched local area networks (2 Credit Values)

By end of this unit, the learner should be able to gain the following knowledge:

  • Describe network fundamentals and implement a simple LAN
  • Define characteristics, functions and components of a WAN
  • Describe how device management can be implemented using the traditional and intelligent ways.
  • Describe how network devices can be managed, monitored and secured

By end of this unit, the learner should be able to apply the following skills:

  • Solve the network challenges with switched LAN technology
  • Perform initial router startup and configuration
  • Configure and troubleshoot EIGRP and OSPF in IPv4 and IPv6 environments
  • Use the command-line interface to discover neighbors on the network and manage the router startup and configuration
  • Implement OSPF Troubleshooting OSPF
  • Establish Internet connectivity Operate a medium-sized LAN with multiple switches, supporting VLANs, trunking, spanning tree and basic routing
  • Troubleshoot IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity
  • Configure and troubleshoot EIGRP in an IPv4 environment and configure EIGRP for IPv6
